performative component update
First Encounters For One’s Own Femininity originally secured an outdoor space with the Louise Hopkins Underwood Art Center [LHUCA] as the venue for a performative reading and art installation for the project. The works our literary juror, Dr. Katie Cortese, selected are so wonderfully delicate that an outdoor venue would likely diminish the works.
NEW INDOOR VENUE SECURED.

TTU Satellite Gallery, part of CASP
I applied for an alternative more intimate indoor gallery venue. The CASP TTU Satellite Gallery at 5&J adjacent to LHUCA has offered exhibition and reading space for February 2017. As an exhibition, the project will open for the First Friday Art Trail in February, 2017. The following Tuesday evening the readings will take place in the same venue.

Currently I am developing the components for the installation for the performative reading.
I am excited personally because it has been a shift in material direction of my current practice. The installation will be predominantly composed of deconstructed discarded mattress quilting, foam, cotton and straw. Interestingly there is a simultaneous revulsion to the human patina-ed used materiality as well as a sumptuous attractive quality as well as all kinds of metaphorical gendered implications. The construction or bindings of deconstructed material engages with hand stitching–sewing.

MORE SEWING
Based on the shifting venue with an inherent change in dates, the online book in order to include a photographic component will follow in publication the exhibition/performance. For now the works are reproduced here.
For all the writers, thank you for your patients.
Sincerely, Kathy Kelley
