Finding Wings

Finding Wings by Jennifer Schomburg Kanke

I don’t remember my first period.

How long did I tell my mother
it had started before digging down
through the bathroom cabinet,
moving dusty peroxide bottles
and open Q-Tip boxes,
until I found myself
what I needed?

Two months, maybe three
and she still said
I was constipated.

This made sense,
as much as anything
she ever said.
